A Tale of Two Cities

An investigation into the differences between two housing estates in London: the Barbican in the City of London, and the Heygate in Elephant and Castle. Through analysing the structures of both buildings, this publication seeks to explain why one of which is now Grade II listed, and the other is to be demolished. The harsh and uncompromising nature and materials of both estates are represented through the predominantly black and white photography, and through the form of the publication itself, with its thick greyboard cover. Colour was used sparingly, only to represent each estate, and the small bars of colour on the title pages indicate the number of times the words ’Barbican’ and ‘Heygate’ are used within each chapter.
